Tribute of Raja Ravi Verma

Even after a century Raja Ravi Verma (1848-1906) retains his status as India's greatest portraiture artist. His influence clearly reflected in early Indian cinema, theatre and popular Indian calendar art. His works are the only real documentation of that period of Indian styling and ornamentation. He borrowed heavily from Indian mythology and cleverly combined this with early European technique of realism in art. Raja Ravi Verma had a passionate obsession with detail… you can hear the rustle of silk and feel the glow of pearls when you stare at his work. Sadly the current genre of fashion imagery is in a great hurry to jettison its rich Indian cultural tradition. This is my humble tribute to him and an attempt to relive and recreate his legacy through these images on today's contemporary women.
